Блистательнейший образец вполне безрадостного тупика, если вы понимаете, о чем я толкую:

«[Платон порицал поэзию, потому что она своим воздействием на зрителя замутняет работу разума.] Aristotle, on the other hand, held the view that a high degree of being moved or terrified or in a similar way affected may have a salutary effect, in so far as it brings about 'the corresponding purification (scil. of the soul) from these and similar affections', i. e. they purge the soul of the very same emotions and thus restore its inner balance.

This interpretation has been rejected by many scholars, because it sounds so pedestrian. But (1) all attempts to explain the phrase as a purification of the emotions instead of a purification of the soul from its emotions have led to artificial interpretations, and (2) Aristotle does not restrict the effect of tragedy to being moved and terrified. We have already seen that he attaches much value to the element of grandeur, and some passages from the Politics suggest that he assumed the educated part of the audience to be capable of some kind of intellectual enjoyment. This point is not elaborated in the Poetics, because this treatise is not a purely theoretical study, but a practical manual concentrating on the most effective means of 'thrilling' the general public» (Verdenius 1983).
